Information Session

King Day 2011                                      King Day 2011

The One King Book initiative increases students' understanding of Dr. King's legacy and contributions, while helping them realize how they may live out his dream. Students read their age-appropriate book, selected by King Day staff, and then create an essay or drawing in response to what they read. Students then submit their essays and drawings to King Day headquarters and select participants are awarded prizes. Last year, over 2,000 young people participated throughout the tri-state region!

MLK365 Service Clubs use the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a springboard to teach students about how they may make sustainable, positive changes in their communities through ongoing civic engagement. The service clubs program empowers young people by enabling them to draw upon their own interests and experiences to create service projects that address diverse areas of local need.

MLK365 Service Clubs provide students with leadership and year-round volunteer opportuntiies.  Along with teaching young people how to organize service projects and events, each curriculum aims to build computer literacy, job readiness, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Club curricula is available for students in grades K - 5, 6 - 8 and 9 - 12. Curricula is flexible and can be implemented as part of a grant-funded after school program, a church youth group or other type of youth-serving program. Global Citizen staff provides curricula and technical support to program and student leaders free of charge.

We hope you will join us on Wednesday, November 2 to learn more about each of these programs.

Global Citizen & MLK365

Global Citizen is non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, community volunteering, civic responsibility and sustained active citizenship among diverse groups, particularly young people.

Our issues of focus include poverty, homelessness, at-risk youth, education, public health, digital inclusion, energy and the environment.  Global Citizen is a weaver of community webs, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds.  We work to build diverse partnerships through volunteer service, thus realizing how much more we have in common than our differences.

Global Citizen was founded by Todd Bernstein, who helped Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis create the National Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994.  Bernstein started the first local King Day of Service in Philadelphia in 1996.

MLK365 is a year-round program that promotes sustainable civic engagement and volunteer opportunities.

The goal of MLK365 is to ensure that Dr. King's legacy and principles are embraced throughout the entire year.  The initiative emphasizes Dr. King's legacy of nonviolence, social justice, equality and excellence.

MLK365 serves as a year-round clearing house for continuing service opportunities, as well as supporting and designing volunteer programs for its partners.
